Ages 9 to 15
Hip hop choreography
Grooves and combinations, then a routine built across the session with the dancers' own ideas in it.
Foundations teaches the grooves that hip hop is built on and a short combination each week. The choreography lab for ages 12 to 15 builds one routine across the session, and the dancers decide whether to share it at the spring showcase in May.
Foundations: ages 9 to 11, 60 minutes
Choreography lab: ages 12 to 15, 75 minutes
Classes of up to 14
Studio B, with a hard-wearing floor

What a class is like
- 01
Step 1: Warm-up
A group warm-up to music that gets everyone moving and ready for the floor work.
- 02
Step 2: Grooves
Bounces, rocks and steps that every combination in the class is built from.
- 03
Step 3: Learn the combination
The teacher breaks the new section into counts, then puts it together at half speed.
- 04
Step 4: Make it yours
Dancers swap in a move of their own in one eight-count, and the group decides what stays.
- 05
Step 5: Run it
The whole class runs it to the music, twice, with the teacher watching from the side.
What to wear and bring
Clothes that move
Loose pants or shorts and a top you can move in. Layers are fine: the room warms up fast.
Shoes
Clean flat-soled sneakers with a grip that doesn't catch on the floor.
Water and a notebook
A water bottle, and a notebook if you like to write down counts. Phones stay in bags.
