Ages 9 to 15
Popping
Sharp hits to the beat, with waves and glides around them. Ages 9 to 11 start in foundations, and ages 12 to 15 move into popping and animation.
Dancers learn the hit, the hold and the release one at a time, then string them together over a groove. Every class begins with a group warm-up and ends with a circle where anyone who wants to can try a sequence of their own.
Foundations: ages 9 to 11, 60 minutes
Popping and animation: ages 12 to 15, 75 minutes
Classes of up to 14

What a class is like
- 01
Step 1: Warm-up
The teacher leads a group warm-up to music. Anyone who feels a sharp pain says so and sits that move out.
- 02
Step 2: Drill the hit
One technique at a time, slowly first and then to the beat: the hit, the hold and the release.
- 03
Step 3: Learn a combination
Eight counts at a time, with a few moves from the day's drill and room for your own.
- 04
Step 4: Run it in groups
Groups of three or four run the combination while the others watch and call out what they liked.
- 05
Step 5: The circle
To finish, anyone who wants to steps in and tries a sequence. Nobody is put on the spot.
- 06
Step 6: Cool-down
A slow walk-through of the warm-up, then water and a few words from the teacher.
What to wear and bring
Clothes that move
A T-shirt or hoodie and pants or shorts you can move in. Hair off the face, and no rings or long necklaces.
Shoes
Clean flat-soled sneakers, or socks if your sneakers are new. Leave outdoor shoes by the door.
Water and a towel
A bottle with a lid that closes. There are shelves for bags, and phones stay in them during class.
